Medtronic looks to Carelink, IBM Watson to mine Big Data on diabetes
Medtronic said it’s harnessing the power of Big Data with its CareLink diabetes management software and a partnership with IBM Watson.
The Fridley, Minn.-based medtech giant said it’s converted data from 125 million patient-days to develop new CareLink reports and announced the new SugarWise app created with the Watson artificial intelligence project.
The SugarWise app is designed to predict patterns and trends based on patients’ insulin, CGM and nutritional data. Anonymized CareLink data from 10,000 patients was used to predict hypoglycemia with a preliminary prediction accuracy of 75% to 86% in a 2-to-4-hour window, Medtronic said.
“Data, insights and analytics have been a cornerstone for our diabetes strategy with CareLink, and we have accumulated over 125 million patient days of data generated by our devices, including continuous glucose monitoring sensor readings and insulin pump events,” diabetes division president Annette Brüls said in prepared remarks. “Through our advanced CareLink portfolio and our expanded network of partnerships, we present actionable insights to drive holistic diabetes care solutions that offer greater freedom and better health to people with diabetes.”
