Medtronic (NYSE:MDT) said yesterday that it named Dr. Elizabeth Nabel, a cardiologist who’s president of Brigham & Women’s Faulkner Hospital in Boston, to its board of directors.
Nabel, who spent 10 years at the National Institutes of Health, has been president of the Brigham since 2010, according to a press release.
"We are pleased that Elizabeth Nabel will join our board of directors," chairman & CEO Omar Ishrak said in prepared remarks. "With her extensive experience and leadership in healthcare, she will be a valued adviser as we move forward with our vision of expanding quality healthcare to people around the world, and continuing to develop innovative therapies that provide both clinical and economic value to patients."
Medtronic said Nabel has spearheaded a new strategic plan at the prominent hospital "that defines a new model of medicine."
Early this year, Ishrak told MassDevice.com that the shift to value-based healthcare is critical for medtech and for the healthcare ecosystem overall.
"Moving to a value-based healthcare system is the only thing that can keep medtech from being commoditized," Ishrak told us. "Value-based healthcare is also the only thing that will prevent a hospital from being commoditized. We’re not the only ones. The providers are right there with us."
