Minnesota-based Medtronic (NYSE:MDT) celebrated the opening of a new manufacturing facility in China where the company will focus most of its hemodialysis system manufacturing.
The medtech titan got into the hemodialysis business last year through a partnership with India healthcare provider Apollo Hospitals Enterprise. The company said at the time that it would invest $25 million into research and development efforts with plans to launch a complete system in 2016.
Medtronic aims to develop systems that use less water, support remote care, improve portability and come with a price tag that’s more friendly to small hospitals and for home use.
Medtronic CEO Omar Ishrak was on site in Chengdu where he joined government officials in pouring drinking water into a hemodialysis system in a symbolic gesture to mark the new facility’s opening," China Daily reported.
