Medtronic launches AI platform for robotic surgery

Medtronic (NYSE: MDT) announced that it launched its new Live Stream function for the Touch Surgery ecosystem of digital technologies.

In April, the company unveiled its Live Stream technology, which features AI capabilities to accompany the Touch Surgery digital offering. Attendees at our DeviceTalks Boston show in May saw DeviceTalks Editorial Director Tom Salemi use Live Stream to help direct a Hugo surgical robot’s removal of seeds from a red pepper in London. The medtech giant’s Digital Surgery unit wrote in a July 15 LinkedIn post: “The big day is here! We’re happy to announce that Live Stream, the newest part of the Touch Surgery ecosystem, is now commercially available in the U.S. and [Western European Union]!”

Touch Surgery Live Stream includes 14 new AI algorithms designed to enhance its digital capabilities within post-operative analysis. The algorithms deliver AI-powered surgical insights for laparoscopic and robotic-assisted surgery.

Medtronic’s latest offering comes as part of its effort to integrate computing power in operating rooms around the globe. Its Touch Surgery ecosystem features surgical video, simulations and case management solutions. The new algorithms span surgical workflow, instrument and anatomy detection. They expand the Touch Surgery Performance Insights platform’s ability to translate surgical videos into actionable insights post-procedure.

According to Medtronic, the expanded analytics cover laparoscopic cholecystectomy, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy and robotic-assisted hysterectomy, among a range of procedures.

Medtronic Touch Surgery Live Stream enables secure live streaming of procedures, creating an immersive virtual learning environment with the benefits of actually being physically present. The company aims to give surgeons access to expert techniques and minimize the need for a crowded operating theater. Surgeons, trainees and OR managers can also conduct and attend live broadcasts and access high-caliber surgical education.
