3. HART reveals death of artificial trachea patient

Harvard Apparatus Regenerative Technology said last week that it learned of the death of a Russian patient implanted with its artficial trachea, but wasn’t informed of the cause of death.

The patient, implanted 2 years ago with a trachea grown using HART’s bioreactor technology, was participating in a clinical trial in Russia, according to a press release. HART said it learned of the death from the study’s principal investigator. Read more

2. U.S. Tax Court denies IRS request in Medtronic case

The U.S. Tax Court has denied a request by the Internal Revenue Service that it issue a partial summary judgment concerning Medtronic’s Cayman Islands subsidiary in an ongoing tax case against the medical device titan.

At issue are certain transactions Medtronic made among its various units during the tax years 2005 and 2006. Medtronic is disputing the IRS’s adjustments of those transactions. Read more

Five disruptive factors playing out for the medical device industry will shape its course going forward, according to a report from consulting firm A.T. Kearney.

The report was culled from interviews with more than 30 executives from 20 companies spanning the medical device space, according to a press release. Read more
