3. Medtronic expects to free up to $4B after IRS beef is settled

MassDevice.com news

Medtronic said today that it expects to land a substantial windfall once it resolves a dispute with the IRS over the next “couple of years.”

In a regulatory filing, Fridley, Minn.-based Medtronic said it expects to repatriate between $500 million and $4.5 billion in overseas cash once the dispute is put to bed. Read more

2. DAPT funk: Study raises questions about Boston Scientific’s Synergy stent

Researchers for the massive Dual Anti-platelet Therapy Study found that patients receiving drug-eluting stents had a lower rate of stent thrombosis and other major cardiovascular events than those treated with bare-metal stents, undermining the common perception that bare-metal stents are safer.

The data, which was the focus of a secondary DAPT analysis, was presented by co-principal investigator Dr. Dean Kereiakes last week at the American Heart Assn.’s annual meeting. Read more

1. Medical device tax pushes B. Braun to spike HQ expansion plans

B. Braun Medical is spiking its plan to expand its Pennsylvania headquarters due to the medical device tax, CEO Caroll Neubauer told MassDevice.com.

The medical device tax, a 2.3% levy on U.S. sales, cost B. Braun $13 million in each of the last 2 years. Neubauer told us that’s too much to absorb and be able to fund the $40 million construction of a new HQ, Neubauer said at DeviceTalks West. Read more
