3. Ambulances get Google Glass
MASSDEVICE ON CALL — A pair of California healthcare companies are teaming up to outfit a suite of ambulances and mobile medical teams with Google Glass, allowing first responders to collaborate with hospitals while en route with emergency patients.
Mobile communications provider CrowdOptic teamed up with medical transport provider ProTransport-1 to deploy the Google Glass broadcasting solution, which the companies hope will improve patient care as well as benefit documentation systems. Read more
2. Abbott CEO defends inversions amid corporate exodus furor
Abbott chairman & CEO Miles White took to the media today to speak out against a new measure that would prevent corporate inversions, like the one included in Abbott’s sales of its generics business to Mylan Inc. and in Medtronic’s acquisition of Covidien.
These acquisitions agreements, as well as a handful of other mega-deals underway, include shifting the companies’ headquarters outside the U.S. where they will benefit from a more favorable corporate tax rate, especially on cash earned overseas. Not exempt from U.S. taxes, White emphasizes, are revenues collected prior to the inversion. Read more
1. Stryker’s Q2 earnings meet The Street
Stryker said that its 2nd-quarter earnings met expectations on Wall Street, despite flat profit growth, on 7% sales growth.
Kalamazoo, Mich.-based Stryker reported profits of $215 million, or 56¢ per share, on sales of $2.36 billion for the 3 months ended June 30, for bottom-line growth of 0.9% on sales growth of 6.8%. Read more
