The MassDevice Weekly Checkup: June 6, 2011

Our Weekly Checkup takes the temperature of the medical device industry’s three largest U.S. clusters: Massachusetts, California and Minnesota.

The MassDevice Indices are weighted according to market capitalization, based on the number of shares outstanding for each company and each Friday’s closing share price.

MassDevice index Massachusetts
The Massachusetts index for the week ended June 3 closed at 6.16, down 4.6 percent compared with the prior week. Since Jan. 1, 2009, when we began tracking these companies, the index has risen 39.0 percent.

MassDevice index Minnesota
The Minnesota index for the week ended June 3 closed at 4.16, down 4.3 percent compared with the prior week. Since Jan. 1, 2009, when we began tracking these companies, the index has risen 40.9 percent.

MassDevice index California
The California index for the week ended June 3 closed at 10.02, down 1.2 percent compared with the prior week. Since Jan. 1, 2009, when we began tracking these companies, the index has risen 136.1 percent.

We also create a composite index of the three regional indices and compare it with four other indices (the S&P 500, the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the Dow’s IHI medical devices index and the NASDAQ exchange):

The Weekly Checkup also compares Monday morning’s opening share prices with their value when the markets close Friday afternoon to calculate the biggest gainers and losers.

Here are the 20 firms that posted the biggest share price gains and losses during the week ended June 3:

  5. Iridex Corp. : 3.10% (open $3.87; close $3.99)
  6. Angeion Corp. : 2.88% (open $4.16; close $4.28)
  7. Ophthalmic Imaging Systems : 2.41% (open $0.83; close $0.85)
  8. NeuroMetrix Inc.: 2.17% (open $0.46; close $0.47)
  9. Interleukin Genetics Inc.: 2.00% (open $0.45; close $0.46)
  10. WuXi PharmaTech: 1.65% (open $17.57; close $17.86)
