Ryan Howard
CEO, Practice Fusion
Ryan Howard’s electronic medical record company Practice Fusion got a big boost from the 2009 stimulus package. Doctors who implemented electronic health record systems in their offices became eligible for $40,000 from the government to help pay for the new technology, but Practice Fusion’s product offered physicians a different opportunity: They could pocket the government funds because Practice Fusion ad supported and free. Practice Fusion continued to grow through 2010 with the rest of the healthcare IT industry, and Howard, who is the founder and CEO of the young company, made these predictions about his company and growing marketplace of which his company is gaining a larger and larger share.
My prediction for Practice Fusion in 2011 is that we not only become one of the largest de facto EHR vendors on the market, with more than 100,000 users nationwide, we plan on adding new partners and new devices (including mobile capabilities) to integrate with our EHR.

In 2011, we’re up against a deadlines from the U.S. Dept. of Health & Human Services. There are aggressive timelines for getting doctors on electronic systems and EHR systems need to be able to move quickly to keep up. With the nationwide shift to EHRs, there is enormous pressure for EHR developers and vendors to create products that minimize the learning curve. Usability is also paramount. Incorporation of user suggestions into the product is very important.
Practice Fusion is free, web-based and has really bucked the trend of expensive legacy vendors by providing a free EHR. Practice Fusion will lead the way in transformation since doctors who use our EHR are able to receive incentive cash and pocket every penny.
