5. Earnings Roundup: Intuitive Surgical, Abbott & St. Jude post street-beating Q1s

Its earnings season again, with major players Intuitive Surgical, Abbott and St. Jude Medical all reporting 1st quarters that beat the street.

Intuitive Surgical posted a solid gain over 2015, seeing shares jump over 25% in response to its massive Q1 postings, with stocks hitting an all-time high. St. Jude got a smaller bump after posting earnings that beat analysts expectations despite reporting slipping profits after its Thoratec buy, and Abbott stayed stable and raised guidance for its full fiscal year 2016.


4. Boston Scientific wins CE Mark for MR-safe Emblem S-ICDs

MassDevice.com news

Boston Scientific said today it won CE Mark approval for its Emblem MRI subcutaneous implantable defibrillator system and magnetic resonance conditional labeling for all previously implanted Emblem S-ICD systems.

The Marlborough, Mass.-based company’s Emblem S-ICD systems are designed to treat patietns at risk of sudden cardiac arrest without the risk of complications associated with transvenous implantable cardioverter-defibrillators. Read more


3. Bone Biologics closes $5.8m round

Regenerative orthobiologic company Bone Biologics said it recently closed a $5.75 million round joined by the Musculoskeletal Transplant Foundation, Orthofix and Hankey Capital to support development of its bone graft substitute.

Boston-based Bone Biologics is developing Nell-1, a bone growth factor designed to be an alternative to other bone growth factors used in surgical procedures such as spinal fusions. Read more


2. Internet petition wants Congress to oust CDRH head Shuren

A group of upset citizens are petitioning for the removal of FDA Center for Devices and Radiological Health head Dr. Jeffrey Shuren, stating dissatisfaction with the control of devices such as Bayer‘s Essure and power morcellators.

The movement, which started as an email campaign last October in which 100s of angry individuals sent templated letters to Shuren asking him to revoke the PMA for Bayer’s Essure has now manifested into a petition to congress to fire him for “putting industry concerns before patient safety,” according to MD+DI. Read more


1. Robotic surgery mix-up: Moll’s Auris buys Hansen Medical

MassDevice.com news

Stealthy robotics-company Auris Surgical Robotics is mixing up the robotic surgery game, saying today it signed a deal to pick up Hansen Medical for approximately $80 million.

Through the merger agreement, Auris will pay $4 per share in cash, which the company says is approximately 39.9% over the closing sale price of the common stock of Hansen Medical as reported yesterday. Read more
