
Johnson & Johnson taps Google for robot-assisted surgery program

Johnson & Johnson today said it inked a deal with Google to develop a robot-assisted surgery program, aiming to enter a market dominated by Intuitive Surgical and its da Vinci device.
New Brunswick, N.J.-based J&J said its Ethicon subsidiary and Google will work on “an innovative robotic-assisted surgical platform capable of integrating advanced technologies with the goal of improving healthcare delivery in the operating room.” Read more
Olympus to pay $92m to settle accounting fraud case

Olympus said today that it agreed to pay as much as ¥11 billion ($92 million) to resolve 2 civil lawsuits arising from a 2011 accounting scandal at the maker of cameras and medical imaging equipment.
The settlements resolve claims raised in Tokyo District Court by 86 entities, including foreign institutional investors and pension funds, that sought to recoup ¥37.7 billion ($316 million) in damages, the Tokyo-based company said. Read more
Philips sells stake in lighting biz for $3B

Royal Philips’ agreed to sell an 80.1% stake in its lighting components division for $2.8 billion to Go Scale Capital, a technology fund that will seek to expand the company’s automotive and LED businesses.
The deal announced yesterday is a prelude to an even bigger strategic move for Philips: Spinning off its main lighting division, the world’s largest lighting maker, via a stock market flotation, as the Dutch group focuses on medical technology and selected consumer products. Read more
ReWalk Robotics plans Q2 launch in India

ReWalk Robotics plans to launch its wearable robotic exoskeleton in India by the 2nd quarter, CEO Larry Jasinski said.
The device, ReWalk, provides powered hip and knee motion to enable people with lower-limb disabilities, such as paraplegia, to stand upright, walk, and in some cases, climb stairs. Read more
