Johnson & Johnson’s DePuy Synthes Orthopaedics business announced today that it acquired Expanding Innovations.
Expanding Innovations develops expandable implant technology for spine surgery. DePuy Synthes believes the acquisition strengthens its spine portfolio and expands its position within the expandable interbody cage segment.
According to a news release, Expanding Innovations offers a proprietary, non-screw-based interbody cage technology. The Mountain View, California-based company designed its technology to mitigate the incidence of post-operative cage collapse and vertebral body subsidence. It also supports procedural efficiency and implant stability.
EI’s commercial portfolio includes the X-PAC TLIF expandable posterior cage, X-PAC LLIF expandable lateral cage and X-PAC N-GAGE lumbar plate systems. The company intends to continue to expand its X-PAC portfolio with next-generation technologies, too. Those include new transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) and laterla lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF) cages. It also has plans to expand into anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF) and deliver enhanced instrumentation.
DePuy Synthes believes the EI portfolio complements its TriALTIS spine system. It plans to integrate the technology into its Velys robotic platform for spine.
The acquisition comes as J&J looks set to separate DePuy in a deal that could reach around $20 billion.
“Expanding Innovations is an exciting addition to DePuy Synthes and furthers our commitment to bringing market-leading solutions across our Spine portfolio,” said Namal Nawana, worldwide president, DePuy Synthes. “Our current portfolio and EI’s innovation pipeline will strengthen our position in this high growth segment while expanding our ability to deliver meaningful innovation for surgeons and patients.”
