Invacare makes and distributes home medical equipment and supplies for non-acute care, including beds, wheelchairs, patient transfer systems and respiratory care products. Founded in 1885 as the Worthington Co., Invacare was spun out in the late 1970s after Johnson & Johnson acquired medical device maker Technicare and decided to sell off that company’s wheelchair division. The company now serves more than 25,000 independent, home medical equipment and long-term care providers, runs 30 factories and employs over 6,000. In January 2013 Invacare sold its medical supplies business, Invacare Supply Group.
