Intuitive Surgical (NSDQ:ISRG) is shipping a new version of its EndoWrist surgical scissors after last month issuing a warning that an earlier model may develop "micro-cracks" that could result in patient harm.

Analysts at SunTrust noted the new shipments as a win for Intuitive Surgical, which is in the midst of some high-profile lawsuits over its da Vinci technology.

In May Intuitive Surgical warned hospitals that the 8mm EndoWrist monopolar curved scissors, sold as an accessory to its da Vinci robot-assisted surgical system, may develop tiny cracks that aren’t visible to the naked eye. The cracks "may create a pathway for electrosurgical energy to leak to tissue during use and potentially cause thermal injury," the company said.

Intuitive Surgical confirmed with MassDevice.com that the company had modified the EndoWrist scissors and that new shipments were underway as of May 31.

"The company worked closely with its manufacturing partners to determine root cause and adjusted manufacturing processes for consistency to ensure the instrument will withstand the rigors of reprocessing," Intuitive communications vice president Angela Wonson told us in an email.

The company had received no reports of injuries associated with micro-cracks in the earlier EndoWrist devices, the company told reporters last month.
