Insulet Corp. is instituting an environmentally friendly disposal program for its OmniPod insulin management system, aiming to keep bio-hazardous waste from entering the environent.

The Bedford firm said its “Eco-Pod” program will take the used devices, separate any hazardous metals and materials and pulverize the remainder.

OmniPod users can enroll in the program on the company’s website; Insulet will cover the cost of the recycling, but customers must pay for shipping the used pods. The first 2,000 customers to enroll will land a free, limited-edition eco-friendly tote bag, the company said.
