ICU Medical (Nasdaq: ICUI) announced that it appointed Daniel Woolson as the new president of the company, effective immediately.
On Sept. 30, the company’s board appointed Woolson, 48, to the position. He has served as corporate VP and GM for Infusion Systems at ICU Medical since 2017.
Before joining ICU Medical, Woolson served as president of Respiratory Solutions at BD from March 2015 to November 2016. Before that, he held various roles at CareFusion, last serving as VP/GM of Specialty Disposables. BD acquired CareFusion for $12.2 billion in March 2015.
Woolson takes over at an interesting time for ICU Medical. The company and its Smiths Medical business have faced a series of challenges since ICU Medical acquired Smiths for $2.35 billion in 2022. Those stumbling blocks in 2024 include:
- A warning in Europe related to infusion cassette reservoirs produced by Smiths Medical (September 2024).
- ICU Medical’s recall of infusion pump system batteries due to a manufacturing defect (August 2024).
- The closing of a Minnesota facility, affecting 83 jobs (July 2024).
- The closing of a Smiths Medical New Hampshire plant, affecting 220 jobs (April 2024).
- Warnings of an issue with Portex tracheotomy tubes (April 2024).
- An FDA Class I recall — the most serious kind — for certain ventilator systems (April 2024).
- An April 3 warning on CADD-Solis infusion pump software (April 2024).
- A software recall affecting nearly 86,000 Medfusion infusion pump systems (March 2024).
- A major syringe pump recall involving more than 50,000 devices (February 2024).
