Doctors in the United Kingdom successfully performed the first surgery using proprietary technology made by I-Therapeutix Inc.
The Waltham-based ophthalmology firm makes the I-Zip ocular bandage, a synthetic hydrogel composed mostly of water. It’s applied as a liquid, but morphs into a soft, protective barrier which then breaks down into tears when the therapy is complete.
The company has CE-Mark approval to market the product in the European Union and is awaiting regulatory clearance in the United States.
I-Therapeutix is the second company involving Confluent Surgical Inc. founder Amar Sawhney, who sold that company to Tyco International Ltd. (now Covidien) in 2006 for $245 million.
