Hyland Software Inc. acquired a privately owned provider of healthcare software and document conversion services, extending Hyland’s reach into clinical and business healthcare markets.
Computer Systems Company Inc., better known as CSC Group, delivers enterprise information management and business process automation software and services to healthcare markets. Among its offerings: revenue cycle management software, an ultrasound reporting and imaging product, and data and document conversion services.
“Currently, clinical applications are in the national spotlight,” said Hyland Software CEO A.J. Hyland in prepared remarks.
The Westlake, Ohio-based company’s enterprise content management (ECM) system, called OnBase, has been particularly good at integrating paper-based information with electronic record systems on the clinical side of healthcare. That’s an important strength as doctors’ practices and hospitals move to all-electronic medical records — a government-mandated push to 2015 that has attracted an initial $22 billion in economic stimulus money.
Doctors and hospitals can use Hyland Software’s OnBase to include paper records and unstructured digital information, like electrocardiogram reports, in their electronic medical records.
But up to 25 percent of paper documents and digital files — such as patient registration or financial information — exist outside of ECM systems, according to Hyland. “We have recognized that ECM is just as important in other parts of the organization, such as patient accounting,” he said.
CSC Group’s products and services help customers eliminate business process bottlenecks, increase productivity and lower operational costs — all important tasks as reform efforts seek to squeeze costs and inefficiencies out of the U.S. healthcare system.
“Our goal is to have the dominant ECM solution across the entire healthcare network,” Hyland said. “The aim is to achieve both the best patient care and most efficient operations possible. Buying the CSC Group strengthens and extends our presence in more parts of the healthcare system, particularly on the financial side.”
Hyland Software reinforced its healthcare business with several acquisitions and other innovations in the last few years.
