FDA expedites Caption Health heart AI software
Caption Health this week said the FDA expedited clearance of an update to its artificial intelligence software.
The Caption Guidance AI-guided medical imaging acquisition system makes it easier for frontline healthcare workers to perform a diagnostic-quality cardiac ultrasound. The system emulates the guidance of an expert sonographer by providing over 90 types of real-time instructions and feedback. This helps users make specific transducer movements to capture images.
Physicians at hospitals across the U.S. shared letters with the FDA explaining how Caption AI would help enable rapid assessment of cardiac function and reduce the risk of exposure for personnel. According to the company, the letters helped accelerate the FDA review process.
“At Northwestern Medicine, we believe AI-based guidance for cardiac ultrasound acquisition will equip our frontline providers to perform these exams with limited training,” Northwestern Medicine cardiologist Akhil Narang said in a news release.
The software platform update includes 88% more types of guidance, improved algorithm performance and optimized workflow. It can capture images at the point of care without specialized echocardiography training.
Caption AI software is available fully integrated with Terason 3200T full-service ultrasound systems.
