Hansen Medical (NSDQ:HNSN) and Philips Healthcare (NYSE:PHG) proved to European regulators that their products for robotic surgery can work together in operating rooms, winning recognition for "certified compatibility" for their devices.
Hansen began the design integration of its Magellan Robotic System with Philip’s Allure X-ray system in 2010, before Magellan had landed CE Mark or FDA clearance. Now, the 2 systems are cleared for use simultaneously, based on Article 12 of the E.U.’s Medical Device Directive.
A Hansen press release called the symbiotic systems the only holistic robotic surgical platform used for peripheral vasculature.
"We are pleased to secure this important certification with Philips, our longstanding imaging partner for our robotic systems,” said Hansen CEO Bruce Barclay in prepared remarks. “Article 12 compatibility ensures seamless coordination and integration of the Magellan Robotic System with Philips’ most advanced live-image guidance systems for our hospital and physician customers, enabling greater access to innovative solutions."
Phillips and Hansen have worked together on previous distribution deals, including deals for the non-robotic components of the business.
