The AtriClip Flex-Mini device recently received FDA 510(k) clearance. Mason, Ohio-based AtriCure says it’s the smallest-profile left atrial appendage (LAA) device on the market. It builds upon the company’s AtriClip platform with ease of use and design simplicity for enhanced access and increased visibility.
AtriClip Flex-Mini features a fully enclosed design with parallel beams for continuous closing force to ensure optimal pressure on atrial tissue. Its low-profile design enhances visibility without compromising stability, according to a news release. This provides physicians with what AtriCure calls “unprecedented control” during procedures.
Additionally, the device has an ergonomic handle design to enable single-handed placement. That further simplifies the application process for AtriClip Flex-Mini.
Dr. Ibrahim S. Sultan serves as a professor and chief of the division of cardiac surgery at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Sultan called AtriClip Flex-Mini “a significant step forward” in ensuring the best possible treatment for patients.
“The AtriClip FLEX-Mini is an unparalleled product that reinforces our position as the market leader in surgical LAA management,” said Michael Carrel, President and Chief Executive Officer at AtriCure. “With nearly 600,000 AtriClip devices sold globally, we are having a significant impact on patients’ lives. Continuing to innovate and enhance the unique features of our AtriClip platform will support even greater growth in this market.”
As the LAA space heats up, AtriCure continues to add to its portfolio. The company said late last year that it expected a launch for AtriClip Flex-Mini in the second half of 2024, inspiring optimism among analysts.
Elsewhere in the LAA market, Medtronic launched the Penditure left atrial appendage (LAA) exclusion device in November 2023, adding another system to the competitive space. Abbott and Boston Scientific also offer LAA devices, while Johnson & Johnson MedTech made its own play in the market last year, too. AtriCure’s management team said last year that it welcomes the competition.
