FDA joins pact for cybersecurity in medical devices

November 17, 2016 By Fink Densford

FDA, NH-ISACThe FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health inked a pact with the National Health Information Sharing and Analysis Center and the Medical Device Innovation, Safety and Security Consortium, looking to improve data sharing and cybersecurity in the industry.

The groups are looking to collaborate on 4 points, according to a press release from the National Health Information Sharing and Analysis Center.

The 1st goal set by the groups is to create an environment which fosters communication and partnership, and which encourages information sharing about cybersecurity vulnerabilities that could compromise medical devices or healthcare IT infrastructure.

The groups 2nd goal is to develop “awareness of the Framework for Improving Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity” and to enable health promoting hospitals sector stakeholders to adapt the framework to their operations.

The last stated goals for the group are to encourage sector stakeholders to develop strategies to reduce cybersecurity vulnerabilities that affect their products, and to “build a foundation of trust” within the community that benefits all stakeholders involved.

The groups hope that the pact will improve communication of cybersecurity vulnerabilities across the board, including sharing of threat information inside and outside the healthcare sectors.

“We have been collaborating with both MDISS and the FDA for a period of time now and it is rewarding to have this memorandum of understanding in place, which formally outlines our collaboration goals. We look forward to bringing the medical device security community together on several critical issues through our joint efforts,” NH-ISAC prez Denise Anderson said in a press release.
