Abbott (NYSE:ABT) recalled its FreeStyle Insulinx blood glucose meter after discovering a software glitch that could deliver incorrect results.
The Chicago-area medical device company said that the FreeStyle Insulinx might display incorrect test results at blood glucose levels of 1024 mg and above. Abbott said there’s been a single reported "patient incident" involving the glitch, according to a press release.
No other Abbott blood glucose products have been affected, according to the release. Abbott issued a free software update to solve the problem and is notifying all users, healthcare providers and centers where the device is sold. There are 50,000 devices currently in use in the U.S., according to the statement.
"Our first priority is to safeguard the health and safety of patients," Heather Mason, senior VP of diabetes care, said in prepared remarks. "We are committed to ensuring that our customers are able to continue to test their blood glucose with confidence, and we initiated this voluntary recall to ensure our products continue to meet the highest standards of quality and safety. We regret any inconvenience this action may cause."
