Covidien plc (NYSE:COV) won 510(k) clearance for its Puritan Bennett 840 ventilator to deliver volumes as low as 2ml, meaning the device can now be used for neonatal patients as well as adults.
The Mansfield, Mass.-based medical products conglomerate can now market the device for the care of infants as small as 300 grams, or just less than 11 ounces.
The company said the Puritan now works with its NeoMode software to offer specific care, such as a neonatal continuous positive airway pressure mode and the ability to increase the fraction of inspired oxygen by 20 percent for up to two minutes during suctioning.
Covidien’s second-quarter profits surged on an increase in sales of its medical devices, despite dropping revenues.
