Covidien (NYSE:COV) named president & CEO José Almeida as chairman of its board of directors, effective March 13.
Almeida succeeds Richard Meelia, who’s been chairman since October 2008 and has agreed to serve as non-executive chairman for the year following his July 2011 retirement.
"Joe has done an outstanding job leading the organization since becoming President and CEO last July," lead director Timothy Donahue said in prepared remarks. "His drive to create long-term shareholder value and his vast knowledge of the global healthcare marketplace significantly enhance the Company’s already strong prospects for sustained growth and progress."
In a separate announcement, Covidien said it named Bayer Healthcare president & CEO Mark Trudeau president of its pharmaceuticals division.
Hansen Medical, marketing VP part ways
Dr. Robert Mittendorff, Hansen Medical’s (NSDQ:HNSN) marketing & business development vice president, agreed to part ways as of today, according to a regulatory filing.
Hansen will cover Mittendorff’s base salary and health care for 6 months, according to the filing. Mittendorff will also remain eligible for up to 37,500 performance restricted stock units, according to the filing. Read more

RIP Edgar Kaiser Jr.
Edgar Kaiser Jr., who founded the Kaiser Foundation, died Jan. 10. He formed the foundation in 1986 "to promote a better understanding throughout Canada of the issues relating to addiction and mental health" and led the group for 26 years, according to a press release. Read more
