Cook Medical wins DOD contract for drug-eluting stents

Cook Medical announced today that the U.S. Dept. of Defense (DOD) awarded it an ECAT contract for implantable medical devices.

The contract includes implantable vascular medical devices like the Zilver PTX drug-eluting peripheral stent. It also applies to the Zenith aortic endografts and associated interventional devices for treating vascular disease.

Cook Medical said in a news release that the contract streamlines the process for the DOD to obtain these products. This way, the DOD can more quickly treat military service members. Terms of the contract extend to one year with four one-year extension options thereafter.

According to the company, it continues to look for more opportunities to strike contract agreements like this one. In October of last year, it picked up a third contract with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. That contract also covered implantable devices with an emphasis on streamlining the supply chain process.

“With this contract, Cook implantable devices will be available to all U.S. DOD hospitals in the U.S., Hawaii and Alaska and will expand to cover all overseas hospitals in the coming months,” said Ross Harvey, VP of supply chain at Cook Medical. “Contracts like this one can take advantage of our global network, which helps get these products into the hands of physicians faster so Department of Defense service members can receive the medical care they need.”
