Hologic’s Q1 sales rise, but stock dips on profits plunge
Shares of Hologic Inc. (NSDQ:HOLX) dipped 2 percent to $19.54 today after the women’s health company said its first-quarter profits plunged 58 percent.
Bedford, Mass.-based Hologic reported net income of $10.9 million, or 4 cents per diluted share, on sales of $432.6 million during the three months ended Dec. 25, 2010.
pSivida and TechniScan drum up $10 million in private rounds
pSivida Corp. (NSDQ:PSDV) and TechniScan Inc. (OTC:TSNI) evidently wanted some privacy in their latest efforts to raise cash.
Watertown, Mass.-based pSivida, which develops ophthalmic drug-delivery devices, expects to net $9.9 million from an equity and warrant-based round involving a group of private investors, the company said today.

It’s the first foray into healthcare for the Chicago-based private investment firm, which uses the vast fortune of the Pritzker family to fund its activities. The group bought Murray, Utah-based Clinical Innovations from private equity player RoundTable Health Partners.

Study: Modified IUD effective against uterine cancer
Spanish doctors developed a new treatment for endometrial cancer that prolongs fertility and has fewer side effects than similar treatments, according to a report published in the Annals of Oncology.
The study showed that an intrauterine device that releases the progesterone-like hormone levonorgestrel, when paired with gonadotropin-releasing hormone, is effective at halting and reversing the growth of the uterine cancers.
Hologic, Henry Schein win multi-million-dollar military contracts
Hologic Inc. (NSDQ:HOLX) won a $32.3 million contract with the U.S. Dept. of Defense for its pap tests and supplies related to the kits, while Henry Schein Inc. (NSDQ:HSIC) landed a $28.8 million deal for general dental supplies.
Bedford, Mass.-based Hologic was the only bidder for its year-long contract, which calls for it to supply the the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps with its ThinPrep test kits for human papilloma virus, according to the Defense Dept.
Hologic, Conceptus drop non-patent claims from lawsuit
Conceptus Inc. (NSDQ:CPTS) and Hologic Inc. (NSDQ:HOLX) agreed to narrow the scope of a patent infringement lawsuit over their respective female sterilization treatments, dropping all unfair competition claims and counter-claims from the case.
