Zimmer to snatch up Synvasive Technology

Zimmer Holdings (NYSE:ZMH) agreed to acquire Synvasive Technology, a Reno, Nev.-based maker of surgical saws and cutting tools, for an undisclosed sum.

Warsaw, Ind.-based Zimmer will roll Synvasive’s StableCut surgical saw blades and eLibra knee balancing systems into its reconstructive division, which includes ZMH’s knees, hips and extremities business. That division brought in $417 million during the company’s most recent fiscal quarter.

Cardica plunges after halting trial

Cardica (NSDQ:CRDC) shares fell more than 20% today after the company said it halted enrollment in a European clinical trial of its MicroCutter XPress 30 because the device "did not perform satisfactorily in thicker tissue" in a small number of cases.

There were no adverse events associated with the problem, but Cardica will have to modify the device, according to a press release.

Intuitive adds to the da Vinci surgical system arsenal | Regulatory Roundup

Intuitive Surgical (NSDQ:ISRG) won FDA clearance for its EndoWrist vessel sealer designed for use with the company’s da Vinci surgical robot.

The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based med-tech maker’s device is wristed to give clinicians full control over vessel sealing in vessels up to 7mm.

Premier signed 3 new agreements for surgical endoscopy and video equipment with Olympus America (TYO:7733), Gyrus ACMI and Kalamazoo, Mich.-based med-tech titan Stryker Corp. (NYSE:SYK) .

Surgical snake maker lands $11.7M in Series C | Funding Roundup

Surgical snake technology developer Medrobotics Corp. closed a $11.7 million Series C funding round led by current shareholders, angel investors and the Pittsburgh Life Sciences Greenhouse.

Medrobotics, originally known as Cardiorobotics, has raised $28.3 million since it spun out of Carnegie Mellon University in 2005.

The Boston, Mass.-based med-tech maker’s robots allow surgeons to perform 2-handed surgeries in hard-to-reach anatomical areas. The robots can support their own weight and move in any 3D space without structural support.

Judge overturns Smith & Nephew’s $85M patent win over Arthrex

Smith & Nephew (NYSE:SNN) saw its $85 million patent win against Arthrex Inc. overturned this week, after an Oregon judge ruled that Arthrex didn’t infringe on SNN’s surgical anchor patents.

The latest round in the 7-year-old patent lawsuit found that "no reasonable jury could possibly find that Arthrex infringed in this case," including via indirect infringement.

RAM Medical pleads guilty to selling counterfeit Bard surgical mesh

Medical product distributor RAM Medical Inc. admitted this week to importing and reselling counterfeit and contaminated surgical hernia mesh products.

The Wayne, N.J.-based company pled guilty to two counts of introducing adulterated and misbranded med-tech into interstate commerce, including some that contained numerous microorganisms, according to the U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman.

Less than 10 percent of retrievable IVC filters removed from patients | MassDevice.com On Call

MASSDEVICE ON CALL — Less than 10 percent of retrievable inferior vena cava filters were removed from patients released from Boston Medical Center even though filter placement was no longer required at discharge.

Of the 679 patients who had received a retrievable IVC filter at Boston Medical Center since 2006 only 9 percent had the IVC filter successfully removed.

Steris and Toshiba collaborate on hybrid ORs

Steris Corp. (NYSE:STE) and Toshiba Medical Systems Corp. struck a deal to collaborate on creating hybrid operating room suites.

The hybrid suites allow surgical and diagnostic teams to perform open surgeries and carry out a wide range of image-guided cardiovascular, vascular and neurosurgical procedures without moving a patient from room to room.

Symmetry Medical bags J&J surgical instruments arm for $165M | Acquisitions Roundup

Orthopedic company Symmetry Medical (NYSE:SMA) signed a definitive agreement to acquire the surgical instrument business of Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) subsidiary Codman & Shurtleff for $165 million cash. 

Symmetry plans to integrate its current hospital direct business, Specialty Surgical Instrumentation, with Codman’s line of surgical instruments.
