Diabetes: Chinese kids nearly 4 times more at-risk than U.S. peers | MassDevice.com On Call

MASSDEVICE ON CALL — Chinese teenagers exhibit rates of diabetes nearly 4 times higher than U.S. teenagers, according to a new report from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill researchers.

The study is the longest of its kind of China, following more than 29,000 patients in 300 communities from 1989 to 2011, using data from the China Health & Nutrition Surveys.

The results, published in Obesity Reviews, suggest that 15% of Chinese children aged 7-17 have symptoms of pre-diabetes, and 2% are diabetic.

St. Louis University sues Medtronic for at least $7M in royalties

Saint Louis University sued Medtronic (NYSE:MDT) this month, accusing the medical device giant of using opaque accounting methods to cheat the school out of at least $7 million in royalties for surgical navigation and imaging technology licenses.

Prostate cancer: To cut or not to cut?

Early results from a long-term study of prostate cancer patients concluded that removal of the gland barely increased the likelihood for survival in patients with low-risk tumors, concluding that the surgical approach "may be neither necessary nor effective."

Sanofi snags hydrogel maker Pluromed for an undisclosed amount

French health care giant Sanofi (NYSE:SNY) signed a definitive agreement to acquire hydrogel maker Pluromed for an undisclosed amount.

Sanofi plans to commercialize Woburn, Mass.-based Pluromed’s LeGoo polymer plug, an injectable gel used during surgical procedures in place of a clamp or snare.

Zimmer to snatch up Synvasive Technology

Zimmer Holdings (NYSE:ZMH) agreed to acquire Synvasive Technology, a Reno, Nev.-based maker of surgical saws and cutting tools, for an undisclosed sum.

Warsaw, Ind.-based Zimmer will roll Synvasive’s StableCut surgical saw blades and eLibra knee balancing systems into its reconstructive division, which includes ZMH’s knees, hips and extremities business. That division brought in $417 million during the company’s most recent fiscal quarter.

Cardica plunges after halting trial

Cardica

Cardica (NSDQ:CRDC) shares fell more than 20% today after the company said it halted enrollment in a European clinical trial of its MicroCutter XPress 30 because the device "did not perform satisfactorily in thicker tissue" in a small number of cases.

There were no adverse events associated with the problem, but Cardica will have to modify the device, according to a press release.

Intuitive adds to the da Vinci surgical system arsenal | Regulatory Roundup

Intuitive Surgical (NSDQ:ISRG) won FDA clearance for its EndoWrist vessel sealer designed for use with the company’s da Vinci surgical robot.

The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based med-tech maker’s device is wristed to give clinicians full control over vessel sealing in vessels up to 7mm.
