Discredited vaccine-autism doc sues critics | MassDevice.com On Call
MASSDEVICE ON CALL — Dr. Andrew Wakefield, whose infamous 1998 research paper in The Lancet found a link between childhood vaccinations and autism, filed a defamation suit against the British Medical Journal and an investigative journalist over a series of articles published last year.
The articles by Brian Deer disclosed discrepancies between a Lancet study and the children’s medical histories. Deer also unearthed financial ties between Wakefield and lawyers fighting against vaccine firms.

Covidien to ditch pharma unit
Covidien plc (NYSE:COV) said it plans to spin out its no-growth pharmaceuticals business into a stand-alone business over the next 18 months.
The announcement sent the Mansfield, Mass.-based health products giant’s shares up more than 4% to $43.90 as of about 10 this morning. CEO José Almeida said Covidien has been considering a separation for years and decided to pull the trigger now that the pharma unit has been fine-tuned.
Survey: Docs have mixed feelings about Obamacare | MassDevice.com On Call
MASSDEVICE ON CALL — Doctors are split when it comes to health care reform, according to a new survey from the Deloitte Center for Health Solutions.
Of the 501 doctors surveyed, 44 percent said the law was "a good start," while another 44 percent said health care reform was "a step in the wrong direction."
Overall, the doctors worried that the new system would increase access to government insurance programs without reducing costs, leaving fewer people uninsured but increasing emergency room wait times and lowering the total quality of care.
