Health care spending hits historical low | MassDevice.com On Call
MASSDEVICE ON CALL — Health care spending increased by 3.9 percent last year, the lowest growth in spending in the entire history of Medicare and Medicaid.

Fresenius Medical Care AG (NYSE:FMS) had an active day on the M&A trail, announcing two deals worth a combined $2.1 billion that should bolster the company’s presence in the U.S.
The German dialysis giant, which houses its U.S. headquarters in Waltham, Mass., said it will pay $1.7 billion to acquire Liberty Dialysis Holdings Inc., a privately held company out of Mercer Island, Washington, which was owned by two private equity firms KRG Capital Partners and Bain Capital.
Medtronic’s controversial Infuse bone graft goes to Yale
Medtronic Inc. (NYSE:MDT) announced Wednesday that it is offering a $2.5 million grant to Yale researchers who will independently review the safety of the company’s controversial Infuse bone graft product.
The funds will cover two reviews of the so-called recombinant bone morphogenic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) product, which stimulates bone formation. Yale expects to complete the reviews in six months.

Report: Smith & Nephew to merge endoscopy, orthopaedic reconstruction units
British orthopedic giant Smith & Nephew plc (NYSE:SNN) will be combining its Memphis, Tenn.-based orthopaedic reconstruction division and its Andover, Mass.-based endoscopy unit, according to a report in the Memphis Commercial Appeal.
No job cuts are expected to result from the move, but the head of the Memphis-based business, orthopaedic reconstruction president Joseph DeVivo, is leaving the company. Endoscopy president Mike Frazzette has been tapped to lead the new “advanced surgical devices” division, according to the newspaper.
