TPG Capital buys blood-screening system maker for $1.97 billion

TPG Capital affiliate IVD Holdings Inc. entered into a definitive agreement to acquire all outstanding shares of Immucor Inc.’s (NSDQ:BLUD) common stock in a deal that’s valued at $1.97 billion.

Immucor shareholders will get $27.00 in cash for each share of stock, about 30 percent higher than the stock’s trading price prior to the announcement.

Immucor stock promptly jumped more than 30 percent to $27 per share when the information was released today, inching closer to the stock’s 52-week high of $27.18.

AtriCure announces a mixed shelf offering of up to $50 million

 AtriCure Inc. (NSDQ:ATRC) filed a mixed shelf offering with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to sell up to $50 million through a combination of debt securities, common stock, preferred stock, warrants, depositary shares and units.

The Cincinnati-area cardiac surgical device maker has also filed rights to sell up to an additional 3,184,535 shares of common stock from time to time.

ATRC stock was trading at $12.91 in the afternoon today, nearly flat with yesterday’s close at $12.90.

Medtronic weathers the Infuse storm, but problems linger

Shares of Medtronic Inc. (NYSE:MDT) stock recovered following a week of high-profile publicity around the company’s Infuse bone morphogenetic protein and a Spine Journal issue dedicated to problems with 13 studies by MDT-sponsored physicians.

MDT shares were trading at $38.95 in mid-day activity today, about even with their June 27 open of $38.20 (but down 10.8 percent from a year-to-date high of $43.20).

PwC: Fewer IPOs in Healthcare during Q2 but value spikes

The return of the initial public offering on Wall Street has helped increase value in healthcare offerings five-fold, even though there were technically fewer deals during the second quarter, according to a PricewaterhouseCoopers report.

Three IPOs fetched nearly $600 million in health care during the three month period ended June 30, 2011, a 320 percent increase from the $142 million brought in on four initial public offerings during the same period last year.

Health care was one of the least active sectors for public offerings, coming in at seventh place on PwC’s rankings.

Diabetes: Analyst predicts 33 percent growth for Insulet over next three years

Insulet Corp. (NSDQ:PODD) may be headed for greener pastures over the next few years, despite increased competition from some heavy hitters in the diabetes space, according to one Wall Street analyst.

Frederick Wise, an analyst at the investment bank Leerink Swann said in a note to investors today that he came away from last week’s American Diabetes Assn. annual meeting convinced that Insulet will meet the bank’s ambitious growth numbers for the Bedford, Mass.-based company.

BSX outlook gets mixed reviews from Wall Street

Boston Scientific Corp. (NYSE:BSX) garnered two upgrades and one downgrade from analysts this week, creating a roller-coaster effect in stock prices for the medical device giant.

The company’s stock has been closing at higher and higher values all week, but slid nearly 4 percent in midday trading Friday after an analyst at wealth management service UBS downgraded the stock from buy to neutral.

Wall Street analyst Rajeev Jashnani said the stock isn’t likely to trade higher until BSX can report sustained revenue.
