
Report: Boston Scientific loses $100m pelvic mesh case

A Delaware state jury issued a $100 million judgment against Boston Scientific in a personal injury lawsuit filed over its Pinnacle and Advantage Fit pelvic mesh products, Bloomberg reported.
The jury found that the devices, used to treat pelvic organ prolapse and female urinary incontinence, were defectively designed and that company executives hid the flaws from plaintiff Deborah Barba, according to the news service. Read more
Stryker wins nearly $9m from insurer

TIG Insurance Co. must pay Stryker nearly $9 million to cover product liability lawsuit settlements on its Duracon Uni-Knee implants, a federal judge ordered this month.
Stryker, which acquired the Duracon Uni-Knee with its $1.9 billion buyout of Howmedica from Pfizer in 1998, ended up paying out $7.62 million to settle the liability suits after problems with the implant surfaced. Read more
Ex-accountant sues SpineFrontier

A former accountant for SpineFrontier sued the company this month for wrongful termination, alleging that the spinal implant maker fired her for raising concerns about manufacturing processes later flagged by the FDA in a warning letter.
Patricia Katz was hired by Beverly, Mass.-based SpineFrontier as a senior accountant in February 2011, according to court documents. But soon after her employment began, “Katz voiced concern about SpineFrontier’s lot tracking and tracing procedures, which involved little to no tracking,” she alleged in a lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for Massachusetts. Wright, Tornier look to settle lawsuits ahead of merger

Wright Medical and Tornier said they inked a deal that would settle shareholder lawsuits filed to block their pending, $3.3 billion merger “solely to avoid the costs, risks and uncertainties inherent in litigation” and without admitting any liability.
Shareholders filed a trio of lawsuits in the Delaware Chancery Court after the erstwhile orthopedics rivals announced the merger of equals last October. Today the companies said they signed a memorandum of understanding, which the court must still approve, that would settle the case, which were consolidated into a single action, according to a regulatory filing.
