Galway-based Bluedrop develops technology aimed at reducing the rate of preventable amputations for people living with diabetes. It develops of an internet of things (IOT)-enabled device, similar to a bathroom scale, that allows patients to check their feet at home. The platform captures images of the user’s feet. Using AI and input from experts, the technology evaluates the data collected.
Founded by former Medtronic R&D engineers, Chris Murphy and Simon Kiersey, the Bluedrop platform could help to replace the feedback mechanism people with diabetes experience after the onset of peripheral neuropathy.
Its offering would enable users to easily scan their feet to collect temperature data and high-resolution images. These could help to determine if whether feet are at risk of developing an ulcer, ultimately helping to prevent diabetic foot ulcers.
The funding reportedly comes as part of Enterprise Ireland’s attempt to engage in more late-stage investments. Bluedrop Medical previously brought in nearly $12.4 million in 2023 and said at that time that it had raised nearly $19 million total since its founding in 2015.
