
Shares of Becton Dickinson (NYSE:BDX) slipped 4.4 percent today after the company announced a 24.4 percent profit slide and missed Wall Street’s expectations for its Q4 earnings.
BD posted profits of $300.0 million, or $1.36 per share, on sales of $2.05 billion for the three months ended Sept. 30. That compares with profits of $396.7 million, or $1.68 per share, on sales of $1.87 billion during the same period last year.
Excluding one-time items, adjusted earnings were $1.39 cents per share, 2 cents under the $1.41 expected by analysts on The Street. Analysts were expecting adjusted EPS of $1.41.

For the full year, Franklin Lakes, N.J.-based BD reported profits of $1.27 billion – down 3.5 percent – or $5.59 per share, on sales of $7.83 billion. That compares with profits of $1.32 billion, or $5.49 per share, on sales of $7.37 billion during fiscal 2010.
Excluding one-time items, adjusted EPS were $5.62 for 2011. Analysts were looking for adjusted full-year EPS of $5.66.
“We are pleased with our solid finish to fiscal year 2011. Despite a challenging business environment, all segments contributed to our success and growth,” president & CEO Vincent Forlenza said in prepared remarks. “We will continue to drive operational efficiencies and make capital and R&D investments to support our innovation strategy as we look to fiscal year 2012 and beyond.”
BD said it expects fiscal 2012 revenue growth of roughly 1 to 3 percent, reflecting "the anticipated effects of lower healthcare utilization, reduced research funding and global macroeconomic conditions," according to a press release. Diluted EPS for the coming year are pegged at $5.75 to $5.85.
The company also announced plans to buy back $1.5 billion worth of its own stock during FY2012, using cash flow and debt financing to fund the repurchasing.
BDX shares were trading at $72.75 as of about 1:15 p.m. today, down 4.4 percent on the day.

Merge Healthcare raises sales, cuts losses during Q3
Merge Healthcare (NSDQ:MRGE) boosted sales by 33 percent and cut net losses by more than 80 percent during the three months ended Sept. 30.
The imaging software provider reported losses of $995,000, or 1 cent per share, on sales of $60.1 million for the quarter.
That compares with losses of $5.0 million, or 12 cents per share, on sales of $45.2 million during the same period last year. Read more
Steris logs Q2 sales gains but profits slide
Second-quarter sales rose nearly 10 percent for Steris Corp. (NYSE:STE), but profits slid
some 17 percent during the three months ended Sept. 30.
The sterilization device maker posted profits of $29.6 million, or 50 cents per share, on sales of $342.7 million for the quarter.
That compares with profits of $35.7 million, or 59 cents per share, on sales of $312.4 million during the same period last year. Read more
Q3 sales, earnings rise for Fresenius
Fresenius Medical Care AG & Co. (NYSE:FMS) logged a 6 percent sales increase and a 13 percent profit increase for the three months ended Sept. 30.
The German dialysis firm reported profits of $279.3 million, or 92 cents per share, on sales of $3.24 billion for the third quarter.
That compares with profits of $247.8 million, or 82 cents per share, on sales of $3.06 billion during the same period last year. Read more
Medical Action Industries’ Q2 sales, earnings increase
Medical Action Industries (NSDQ:MDCI)boosted sales by 28 percent and increase profits by 18 percent during the three months ended Sept. 30.
The medical products maker posted income of $554,000, or 4 cents per share, on sales of $109.7 million for the second quarter.
That compares with profits of $469,000, or 3 cents per share, on sales of $85.9 million during the same period last year. Read more
DJO Global’s Q3 sales rise, but losses gape
Third-quarter sales for DJO Global rose 13 percent but losses gapped wider by a whopping 234 percent.
Privately held DJO reported losses of $25.8 million on sales of $263.1 million for the three months ended Oct. 1.
That compares with losses of $7.7 million on sales of $233.6 million during the same period last year. Read more
Given Imaging triples Q3 profits
Given Imaging Ltd. (NSDQ:GIVN) tripled its profits during the three months ended Sept. 30 on a 16 percent sales increase.
GIVN logged profits of $3.8 million, or 20 cents per share, on sales of $44.7 million for the third quarter.
That compares with profits of $1.0 million, or 17 cents per share, on sales of $38.7 million during the same period last year. Read more
