ATHENS, Ohio — Quidel Corp., the San Diego, Calif.-based company that makes point-of-care diagnostic tests, agreed to acquire Diagnostic Hybrids Inc. of Athens, Ohio, for $130 million in cash.
Started in 1983 by a group of Ohio University professors, Diagnostic Hybrids was spun out of the university to commercialize its sophisticated diagnostic tests used mostly by hospital and reference laboratories.
PLYMOUTH, Minnesota — Cardiology device maker ATS Medical Inc.‘s (NSDQ:ATSI) stock plummeted 18 percent in early afternoon trading Jan. 12, a day after the company announced it expects losses for the fourth quarter and full year of 2009.
The company blamed the worse-than-expected projections on slow growth in its heart valve and heart surgery businesses, according to a statement. Its share price had fallen to $2.65 early Tuesday afternoon, after closing the prior day at $3.24.

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minnesota– Vatrix Medical Inc. is seeking $2.2 million in early stage capital, according to documents filed with the federal Securities and Exchange Commission.
The company, which has so far raised $230,000 from the sale of equity and options/warrants, is developing technology to prevent and treat vascular aneurysms, a fatal disease that causes the walls of blood vessels to expand, weaken, and ultimately rupture.

(NYSE:IVC) warned that the looming specter of a federal medical device tax has prompted it to suspend matching 401(k) contributions, stop merit-pay increases for management and freeze hiring.

PLYMOUTH, Minnesota — A day after the FDA published details of a company-initiated recall of cracked catheters, ev3 Inc. responded Wednesday, saying the faulty devices resulted in “some adverse events” to patients.
ev3’s cracked Trailblazer Support Catheter did not cause any patient deaths, according to chief communications officer Julie Tracy. The faulty device did, however, result in “some adverse events” to patients, but Tracy said she didn’t have further specifics.
