With this announcement, Hamlin becomes the first ambassador for the Abbott HeartMates Program. The program aims to create a community of support for people and caregivers impacted by heart conditions. It enables the sharing of stories and provides emotional support while connecting people with others going through similar journeys.
Hamlin in January collapsed on the field, going into cardiac arrest after making a tackle in an NFL game. He received CPR, automated external defibrillation (AED) and other treatments before being transported to the hospital. Hamlin later confirmed he suffered an episode of commotio cordis. He since made his return to the football field only a few weeks ago.
“After experiencing a cardiovascular event that changed my life, I know the power and importance of having an engaged team to lean on for mental and physical recovery,” Hamlin said in a news release. “I’m partnering with Abbott to launch HeartMates because we share a vision to offer the support and encouragement I received after my incident, so others feel empowered to achieve their own comeback stories.”
Creating the HeartMates Program
Abbott’s announcement invites anyone “committed to inspiring others through their heart health stories” to join the program. Its team includes those directly or indirectly affected by a heart condition. That includes cardiovascular patients, caregivers, healthcare providers, friends and family.
Team members can collaborate directly with Abbott and Hamlin as program ambassadors. They can promote the community to those impacted by heart conditions.
Abbott invites individuals seeking to nominate someone (or submit themselves for consideration) to share their stories via email at [email protected]. It plans to “draft” the inaugural team in early 2024.
Hamlin and Abbott also recently visited Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital in Westchester, N.Y., to learn from caregivers and hear comeback stories directly from people who have experienced cardiac events.
“At Abbott, we pour our hearts into developing innovative medical devices that empower people to come back from cardiovascular events,” said Dr. Nadim Geloo, senior director of medical affairs in Abbott’s Structural Heart business. “However, nobody makes a comeback alone. Our HeartMates program creates a community of support and resources for those navigating their heart health and embodies our unwavering commitment to ensuring that no one faces these challenges alone.”
