Welch Allyn president & CEO Julie Shimer announced plans to retire from the Skaneateles Falls, N.Y.-based diagnostics maker by the end of 2012.
Shimer became the first woman to hold the corner office at the 95-year old company when she took the position in 2007 after 5 years on the med-tech maker’s board of directors.
She is credited throughout Welch Allyn for developing a research, development and marketing strategy that led the diagnostics device company to develop products for more efficient and effective patient care, according to the company.

In her first 2 years in charge of Welch Allyn, the company won "Best Places to Work" awards in Ireland and Mexico and broke ground on a $30 million headquarters expansion project.
Prior to joining the Welch Allyn team, Shimer was president & CEO at Vocera Communications and held executive positions at 3Com Corp., Motorola and AT&T Bell Laboratories.
"After a long and fulfilling career that has lasted more than 30 years and offered the opportunity to work for wonderful companies in a number of different capacities, I am looking forward to retirement and the opportunity to spend more time with family," Shimer said in prepared remarks.
