InVivo Therapeutics Holdings Corp. (OTC:NVIV) appointed spinal cord injury expert Dr. Edward Wirth as its new chief scientist.
InVivo brings Wirth to the team as its waiting for a green light by the FDA to begin human trials of its biodegradable scaffold for treating spinal cord injury.
The scaffold is designed to protect and support spinal tissue and prevent secondary injury, including inflammation and glial scarring, following traumatic spinal cord injury.

"I’ve been impressed with the cutting-edge work and laboratory data developed by the InVivo team, and I firmly believe the use of InVivo’s platform of implantable biopolymer scaffold technologies is the future of SCI treatment," Wirth said in prepared remarks.
If given the green light by the federal watchdog agency, InVivo would begin a 10-patient trial in early 2012. Trial subjects would join the study within a day or so of being injured, InVivo CEO Frank Reynolds told MassDevice.
