Stryker is free to make an offer for Smith & Nephew after a 6-month no-bid period elapsed last week, fueling speculation that the U.S orthopedics giant will move on its British rival.

Boston Scientific should pay Johnson & Johnson $7.23 billion in damages and interest for breach of contract, nearly 9 years after Boston Scientific won a controversial bidding war for device maker Guidant, lawyers for J&J told a U.S. federal judge today.
“To be blunt about it, Guidant cheated – and then it lied to Johnson & Johnson so Johnson & Johnson would not discover what Guidant had done,” attorney Harold Weinberger said at the start of a non-jury trial in Manhattan federal court. Read more

U.S. medical device maker Stryker is examining a bid for Britain’s Smith & Nephew as a regulatory restriction barring an offer comes to an end, Bloomberg reported today, citing unnamed sources.
Shares of Smith & Nephew, which makes artificial knees and hips, rose as much as 10%. Read more
