The growing Patients Safety Movement has more than doubled its commitments from medtech companies over the course of a single year, with nearly 30 companies promising so far to make the data gathered by their devices available to anyone interested in improving patient care.
The group at this time last year announced the 1st 9 medtech pledgers, including companies such as GE Healthcare Systems (NYSE:GE) and Zoll Medical (NSDQ:ZOLL). The new list includes titans such as Philips Healthcare (NYSE:PHG) and smaller groups such as opthalmic devices maker NeurOptics.
The growing list, now available on the Patient Safety Movement website, includes a total of 28 companies, but that figure is expected to increase over the course of the next few days and beyond, a spokesperson told MassDevice.com today.
The medtech members have promised to make available by request non-sensitive patient data gathered by healthcare devices, allowing teams of developers and engineers to innovate new ways to combine, analyze or otherwise use the data to help patients.
Philips Healthcare signs Patient Safety Movement’s data openness pledge
Patient Safety Movement backer Masimo (NSDQ:MASI) hopes to lead the way, making its own data available for a joint venture with fellow pledge-signer Cerner in efforts to combine patient monitoring data and patient electronic health records in a manner that may be able to "sniff" for patient problems that could occur, Masimo chairman & CEO Joe Kiani told MassDevice.com today.
"I’m seeing, myself, that’s it’s working and I hope our colleagues out there are seeing it," Kiani said. "If they’re not, we’ll hope they’ll contact the Patient Safety Movement."
The foundation plans to use the public pledges to hold companies feet to the fire and ensure that interested parties get the data they’ve been promised.
"They’ve made a public pledge, and I know they’re not going to say no," Kiani added. "But that’s how we’re self-policing it, by people telling us about it."
