MASSDEVICE ON CALL — Med-tech titan Medtronic (NYSE:MDT) is expanding its operations at facilities in Galway, Ireland, and Jacksonville, Fla., adding at least 175 jobs along the way.
The Minneapolis, Minn.-based medical device maker began construction on a new customer innovation center in Ireland, an event that drew the European Union’s commissioner for research, innovation and science Máire Geoghegan Quinn to the site this morning.
The new space, expected to be completed by 2013, will feature a virtual cath lab and innovation suite, GalwayNews.ie reported.
Medtronic is also planning a new $14 million, 75,000-foot expansion to its facility in Jacksonville to house its growing surgical technologies division. The business will also add 175 new jobs in the area, JaxDailyRecord.com reported.
The Jacksonville city council awarded Medtronic $2.4 million in city and state incentives for the expansion, according to the news source.
