Dr. Margaret Hamburg, who resigned as FDA commissioner in February, was named foreign secretary of the U.S. Institute of Medicine this week.
Hamburg spent 6 years leading the federal safety watchdog, overseeing a massive revamp of its medical device, drug, food and tobacco regulation.
At the IOM, Hamburg’s part-time position will have her advising IOM president Victor Dzau on international matters and serving as a liaison to the IOM’s foreign counterparts, the agency said.
Hamburg’s father David Hamburg was IOM president from 1975 to 1980, according to a press release.
His daughter started at the IOM April 6, the health bureau said.
"Global engagement and impact are strategically important for the IOM. I am delighted that Peggy has agreed to take on this important responsibility," Dzau said in prepared remarks. "Her experience and interests equip her superbly for the role of foreign secretary, and I look forward to working with her to expand IOM’s global leadership."
