Carestream Health said it landed 510(k) clearance from the FDA for its new Vue Motion mobile app for Apple and Samsung mobile device platforms.
The app gives physicians mobile access to X-ray exams using Apple’s iPhone 4 and iPad 2 devices, as well as the Galaxy Note and Galaxy S III devices made by Samsung.
Carestream said it hopes to develop the technology for other mobile platforms, aiming to make it a universal clinical viewer.
“This clearance allows physicians and specialists to read – not just view – medical images on Apple and Samsung mobile phones and tablets. Diagnostic review of X-ray images with mobile devices can expedite patient treatment decisions and enable better collaboration, which can ultimately help enhance patient care. Carestream is the first enterprise-level healthcare IT supplier to receive its FDA clearance for image reading on more than 1 mobile platform and operating system,” Neville Skudowitz, Carestream’s global product director for healthcare information solutions, said in prepared remarks.
Rochester, N.Y.-based Carestream landed a $70 million extension for a 5th year on its radiology systems contract with the U.S. Defense Dept. late last year.
