3. St. Jude Medical closes $3B Thoratec buy
St. Jude Medical closed its $3.3 billion buyout of Thoratec, a day after the implantable heart pump maker’s shareholders approved the $63.50-per-share deal.
“St. Jude Medical is excited to bring together 2 companies that are considered heart failure therapy leaders and build on our established franchise that is now uniquely positioned to offer physicians and patients innovative solutions across the heart failure continuum,” COO and incoming president & CEO Michael Rousseau said in prepared remarks. “We believe this acquisition represents a tremendous opportunity and we welcome Thoratec’s employees as we look forward to changing the way the world views the treatment of this expensive epidemic disease.” Read more
2. Philips looks to the Internet of Things with Amazon deal
Royal Philips said it signed on to a new platform from Amazon designed to facilitate the so-called “Internet of Things,” aiming to link and collect data from mobile healthcare devices.
Amazon Web Services said its AWS IoT platform is designed to allow companies to “store, process, analyze, and act on the volumes of data generated by connected devices on a global scale.” Philips said it plans to use it with its HealthSuite platform. Read more

Boston Scientific is looking for some ideas about using remote monitoring to improve care and is willing to put up $25,000 to find them.
The Marlborough, Mass.-based medical device company’s Connected Patient Challenge is an open invitation for submissions from clinicians, engineers, designers and entrepreneurs on new ways to manage the flow of data and the decision-making process, via the Medstro social networking site. Read more
