Multisensor: Collecting medical data through the mouth
Multisensor Diagnostics has developed a device, Mouthlab, that they believe could be used like Star Trek’s “Tricorder” to assess the overall health of a patient.
The device, which is inserted into a patient’s mouth for 1 minute, measures breathing rate and pattern, blood pressure, temperature, pulse rate, blood oxygen saturation, electrocardiogram trace and spirometric lung function.
“Our idea was to create a device that can act as an extension of the doctor’s office,” co-founder Sathya Elumalai said.
Elumalai said that the company intends for its device to become a part of a patient’s morning routine, just like brushing their teeth.
The data is collected and transferred to the cloud, where it is collected and analyzed to get a comprehensive look at how a patient suffering from a chronic condition, such as congestive heart failure, is doing in real-time. If the system detects any abnormalities, an alert is sent to the patient’s caregiver.
