AliveCor announces updates for smartphone ECG

San Francisco-based AliveCor Inc. last week launched the visibility-enhancing AliveECG App for its iPhone-based Heart Monitor ECG, an add-on that the company says will "improve the visual output" of the device.

The app uses an "
Enhanced Filter," a technology that reduces noise from the environment or muscle vibrations, which can cause ECG strips to be difficult to read, according to the privately held company.

The FDA-cleared and CE-marked Heart Monitor ECG snaps onto the back of an iPhone to record, display, store, and transfer single-channel ECG rhythms wirelessly with the corresponding AliveECG app.

“The new technology makes it easier for patients using the device to record and send cleaner ECGs. This makes it easier and more efficient for me to diagnose the problem,” San Francisco cardiologist Dr. Jeffery Olgin said on behalf of the company.

The new app also includes a revamped menu that allows patients to tap their activities and symptoms to annotate ECG readings and provide “greater context in which to interpret the ECG recording" and "aid in the identification of arrhythmia triggers,” the company said.

“AliveCor’s vision is to provide medical professionals and patients with cost effective quality solutions that deliver superior clinical utility,” AliveCor president & CEO Euan Thomson said in prepared remarks. “We have a robust product pipeline and plan to introduce new features, products, and services on a regular basis to further our vision.”
